How-To: Trunk/Gas Door opener on a '93-'94 del sol

Author: Geo

Parts needed:
Control Unit and cable from a donor car (del sol '95-'97) or a control unit from a Civic '92 up/Accord '90 up, all are the same that have a trunk opener on them, Accords covers come in different colors other then just plain black, Civics may too. While you picking up the control unit be sure to get the clips (or use the wire cushions part number: 91902-SB2-003, come 3 to a parkage) that hold the cable in too. The cable you will need to get as both the Accord/Civic ones are to long to fit properly is the Del Sol remote trunk cable part number: 74880-SR2-A00

Tools needed:
Screwdriver, phillips (regular and a large one), small flat screwdriver
Socket set and wrenches
Imnpact driver

1-Remove the rear panels, storage boxes, seat (drivers), rear and side panel from trunk (be careful when removing the clips from the back rear trunk panel, lift up on one side then remove), remove cover, bolts from control assembly and disconnect cableing, save bolts.

2-Run trunk cable, it can be started from inside the cab or from the trunk, attach clips to hold it, can't remember how many, I believe there was three or so holding it along the trunk edge.

3-I had to remove the rear lock assembly as my hands couldn't get to the back of it to attach the cable. Use a impact driver to remove the three screws that hold the lock assembly in to the rar panel, put cable on and then reattach lock assembly back in with the three screws. You shouldn't have to remove the rod from the back panel key lock to do this.

4-Inside the cab, run cable through holes in frame and floor and under carpet (there are the holes for the second cables already there next to the gas door cable, runs through the frame in two places. will have to lift the carpet up to get it through properly) and out the hole in carpet where control unit sits.

5-Now the tricky part, I used my old lock by taking it apart and using the tumbler from it by putting them in the new lock assembly. Put the lock back in the control unit.

6-Now to attaching the control assembly to side, you will notice that only one hole lines up. There are two way to fix this problem. The first is using the front hole and on the back one I made a metal bracket using the old back hole, drilled a hole for the bolt and attached it, then marked the small hole I drilled in the control unit to match the bracket I made, removed the bracket and drilled a hole in it and put a small bolt in it with a nut and the end sticking out, attached the cables then put the control unit in with the bolt in the front and a nut and washer on the small bolt from the braket I made to hold it in place. With the second metheod you can just mark the back hole and then drill and tap a new hole if you want.

7- Put the cover on and checked that it worked for both the gas door and trunk. Some Adjustment maybe necessary so both open properly.

8-Put the panels back in, the seat, and the rear carpet panels. Done. You have to remember that the trunk only will be locked now with the key, not the gas door as before. Enjoy your new trunk popper.

On a side note, the stock '93-'94 floor mats won't quite fit right as the new control unit is a bit longer then the old one but you can slide the back edge under the rear lip of the unit to fit. '95 up mats will fit just fine.
